Lung Cancer, Mesothelioma Victims Battle Stigmas As Well As ...

The video above from WCVB-TV mentions how Diane Legg has been using her lung cancer diagnosis eight years ago to fight some of the stereotypes associated with the disease. In a Hartford Courant article published on August 5, 2012, Legg said how the stigma bothers her and most often the first question she receives is whether she smoked.

?No other disease, nobody asks such an in-your-face question. Most people who have a heart attack, they don?t ask if they smoked,? Legg told the Courant. ?It?s not an important question. The answer is, ?It does not matter.? Everybody deserves compassion, and funding to eradicate a disease.?

Legg told the Courant that the stigma is unjustly associated with lung cancer. While mesothelioma is sometimes thought of as a lung cancer caused by asbestos exposure, mesothelioma is actually a cancer affecting the lining or the covering of the lung. Because many of the symptoms of mesothelioma resemble those of lung cancer, the same unjust stigma Legg and other lung cancer victims experience also occurs for those diagnosed with mesothelioma.

Mesothelioma is frequently the result of exposure to asbestos, and you can find information about products containing asbestos on our website.
