Boo Boo the Bear quickly becoming national celebrity | Outdoors ...

McCALL, Idaho (KBOI) - Well, it didn't take long until Boo Boo became a celebrity.

The young bear?s story of burned paws and rescue by National Forest and Idaho Fish and Game personnel spread across the country in a matter of hours.

In the days since, both Boise National Forest and Idaho Fish and Game offices have received numerous phone calls and e-mails from people offering good wishes and monetary support. Many others have asked about volunteer opportunities to care for the young cub, who's now at the Wildlife Lab in Caldwell.

He's currently not accepting any visitors.

?We?ve heard from folks all across Idaho, and from other states including California, Texas and New York,? Fish and Game conservation educator Evin Oneale noted. ?Each note or phone call has the same common theme ? concern for this young bear. It?s very gratifying to know that so many people care.?

Fire officials rescued Boo Boo, who was orphaned by the Mustang Complex Fire on the Salmon River. The cub was found in a burn area near the Corn Creek Boat Launch Saturday morning.

The bear's paws were blistered with second-degree burns. A fire crew looked for the cub's mother without success.

Officials estimate that the 20-25 pound cub had not eaten in several days.

(Additional Photos of Boo Boo >>> Note: Some pics highlight the burns.)

With second-degree burns on all four paws, the young bear faces a long recovery.

?Infection is the main concern right now,? Oneale said. ?At this time, our State Veterinarian is evaluating local facilities that can give the cub the medical attention it needs to make a full recovery.?

Meanwhile, the cub is being cared for at a Fish and Game facility where it is eating regularly and receiving necessary medical care.

Idaho Fish and Game is currently unable to accept donations to help pay for treatment.

?Once a care facility is selected, we?ll let people know where and how they can provide funding to cover the costs of care and treatment,? Oneale said.

Affluent people less likely to reach out to others in times of trouble?

ScienceDaily (Aug. 30, 2012) ? Crises are said to bring people closer together. But a new study from UC Berkeley suggests that while the have-nots reach out to one another in times of trouble, the wealthy are more apt to find comfort in material possessions.

"In times of uncertainty, we see a dramatic polarization, with the rich more focused on holding onto and attaining wealth and the poor spending more time with friends and loved ones," said Paul Piff, a post-doctoral scholar in psychology at UC Berkeley and lead author of the paper published online this month in the Journal of Personality and Social Psychology.

These new findings add to a growing body of scholarship at UC Berkeley on socio-economic class -- defined by both household income and education -- and social behavior.

Results from five separate experiments shed new light on how humans from varying socio-economic backgrounds may respond to both natural and human-made disasters, including economic recessions, political instability, earthquakes and hurricanes. They also help explain why, in times of turmoil, people can become more polarized in their responses to uncertainty and chaos.

For example, when asked if they would move across the country for a higher-paying job, study participants from the lower class responded that they would decline in favor of staying close to friends, family and colleagues. By contrast, upper class participants opted to take the job and cut ties with their community.

Although the study does not provide a definitive reason for why the upper class, when stressed, focuses more on worldly goods than relationships, it posits that "material wealth may be a particularly salient, accessible and preferred individual coping mechanism ? when they are threatened by perceptions of chaos within the social environment."

Each experiment was done with a different group of ethnically and socio-economically diverse participants, all of whom reported their social status (household income and education) as well as their level of community mindedness and/or preoccupation with money.

In a lab setting, researchers induced various psychological states in their subjects -- such as uncertainty, helplessness or anxiety -- so they could accurately assess how social class shapes the likelihood of people turning to others or to wealth in the face of perceived chaos.

Chaos is defined in the study as "the feeling that the world is unknown, unpredictable, seemingly random ? a general sense that the world and one's life have turned uncertain and topsy-turvy." This uncertainty typically triggers either a fight-or-flight or a "tend-and-befriend" response, which researchers used to assess participants reactions to induced stress.

In the first experiment, a nationwide sample of 76 men and women ranging in age from 18 to 66 were tasked with selecting, online, a visual graph that best reflected the trajectory of economic ups and downs they believed they were likely to face in their lifetimes. The results showed that the upper class and, to a small degree, Caucasian participants, were less likely than the lower class and minorities to anticipate financial instability. Lower-class participants who expected more turmoil in their lives were more likely to turn to community to cope with perceived chaos, the study found.

In the second experiment, 72 college students were asked to write about positive and negative factors that could impact their educational experience. Potential threats that they cited included canceled classes, tuition hikes and academic failures. Again, worries about chaos and helplessness spurred lower class college students -- but not the upper class ones -- to say they would turn to their community for support. In the third experiment, 77 students were put through computerized tasks in which they rearranged into sentences words that either alluded to chaos or something negative. This exercise was designed to prime certain participants to see their environment as unpredictable and scary. When these participants were offered five minutes to take part in a community building task where they could develop friendships with a group of their peers, only lower class participants jumped at the opportunity.

The fourth experiment had 135 students unscramble similar words into sentences and then report on how much they agreed with such statements as "Money is the only thing I can really count on" and "Time spent not making money is time wasted." When made to feel as if the world was chaotic, upper class participants consistently agreed more strongly with these statements.

In the fifth experiment, 115 students were given a hypothetical scenario in which an employer offered them a new job for a higher salary, with the caveat that they would need to move, and potentially lose touch with their current network of family, friends and colleagues. Again, when primed with feelings that the world was uncertain and chaotic, upper class participants were more amenable to cutting ties and taking the job, whereas lower class participants opted to stay close to their support networks.

"Given the very different forms of coping that we observe among the upper and lower classes, our research suggests that in times of economic uncertainty and social instability, disparities between the haves and the have-nots could grow ever wider," Piff said.

Other coauthors of the study are UC Berkeley psychologist Dacher Keltner; Daniel Stancato, a psychologist in Seattle, Wash.; Andres Martinez of George Mason University and Michael Kraus of the University of Illinois, Urbana-Champaign. The research was funded in part by the National Science Foundation.

Yale president Richard C. Levin stepping down after 20 years

August 31, 2012 - 06:50 am

NEW HAVEN, Conn. (AP) - Yale University President Richard C. Levin, who transformed the Ivy League school with a major building and renovation program, an expansion in financial aid and growing international ties, announced Thursday he is stepping down at the end of the academic year after 20 years.

Levin, 65, has served the institution longer than any other president currently in the Ivy League.

His legacy extends well beyond Yale, with several of his administrators going on to lead top universities such as Duke, MIT, Oxford and Cambridge.

Levin, who plans to take a sabbatical and write a book, also left a major impact on New Haven as Yale became a major retail landlord and began a home ownership program and a college scholarship program for local high school graduates.

Yale's endowment went from $3.2 billion when Levin was named president to $19.4 billion this year.

Levin helped raise more than $7 billion during his tenure, Yale officials said.

"He transformed the university in so many ways," said Yale trustee Indra Nooyi, chief executive of PepsiCo. "I'd say that Rick Levin will go down in history as one of the greatest presidents that Yale ever had."

Levin is credited with leading the school's largest building and renovation program since the 1930s.

Yale renovated all 12 of its residential colleges and has plans to build two more.

About 70 percent of the space on campus has been partially or comprehensively renovated since 1993.

Under Levin, the university improved its historically difficult relationship with its unions by securing long-term contracts.

A homebuyers program started in 1994 offered financial incentives to Yale employees to buy homes in the city, and more than 1,000 faculty and staff have participated, Yale officials said.

In 2008, Yale announced what it called the largest increase in financial aid spending in its history, reducing the average cost by more than half for families with financial need, university officials said.

Levin said Thursday that the initiative "made a huge difference in the kind of students we can attract, the very best and brightest from all segments of society and from all around the world."

Yale's percentage of international students went from 3 percent to 10 percent as it offered financial aid to foreign students as well.

All students were offered opportunities to study or work abroad, Yale offered leadership education for international officials and emerging leaders and its professors worked with faculty in China and other countries.

A planned joint campus with the National University of Singapore will open next year, and Levin predicted it will become a model for higher education in Asia.

Levin said he is leaving Yale with no regrets. "It's just been an amazing run," Levin said. "We've accomplished so much in strengthening Yale's programs and in building Yale's position as a global institution."

Last year, students filed a complaint with the U.S. Department of Education that Yale failed to properly respond to sexual harassment.

Department officials raised concerns with how complaints were handled in the past but praised the steps the university has taken.

Levin noted the department found no violations and said it was an opportunity to make significant changes.

Yale Corp., the university's governing body, will conduct a search for Levin's replacement.

The last Yale president to serve 20 years was Arthur Twining Hadley, who took office in 1899. Levin, who was born and raised in San Francisco, met his wife, Jane Levin, at Yale.

"From the day Jane and I entered graduate school in 1970, Yale has been our life," he wrote in a message to the Yale community. Levin was an economics professor when he was tapped to become president in 1993.

His wife is a senior lecturer, and the couple live in New Haven, where they raised four children.

When Levin took over, Yale's Gothic buildings were deteriorating, a budget deficit divided the campus and urban blight and crime encroached.

Law professor and former law school dean Tony Kronman called it a time of anxiety at the university, where there was "a mood of malaise within the faculty, an uncertainty as to whether we would be able to maintain our position of pre-eminence."

He said Levin quickly showed a steady hand and patience and persistence.

"The most remarkable thing to my mind," Kronman said, "is just his steadiness of purpose day in and day out, year after year."

On My Insurance Soapbox Again? ? Travel on a Dream's Blog

With Hurricane Isaac hitting Louisiana and the 7 year anniversary of Hurricane Katrina, I thought it was a good opportunity to bring up travel insurance once again.

Travel insurance is much the same as any other insurance you purchase.? The reason you purchase insurance is to minimize losses in case of mayhem.? Whether it?s an auto accident, flooded home, or hurricane preventing you from taking your dream cruise, insurance is purchased to protect you if something goes wrong.? You could be the best driver in the world, but you still could get hit by the worst driver in the world, who didn?t bother to get insurance.

I do realize that sometimes, getting insurance just seems like a waste of money.? I?ve been on 28 cruises and used my insurance once.? The amount I was paid by the insurance company was far less than the cost of the insurance over the years.? But what if I had a medical emergency onboard, while in a small foreign country, with subpar medical facilities.? What if I had to be evacuated from the ship, with a helicopter, to take me back to a medical facility and the back to the US?? The thought of how this would bankrupt my family is one of the main reasons I continue to purchase insurance.

But let?s look at something as simple as the weather.? We all should know that a cruise line is not going to put their multi-million (or even billion!) dollar cruise ships in harms way, not to mention all of the passengers and crew onboard.? So let?s say a hurricane is coming towards Miami, where you are scheduled to embark on Saturday.? The cruise line is going to divert the ship if necessary or make changes to the schedule to protect everyone onboard plus make sure the sailing is safe.? Obviously if that happened, the cruise line would give me my money back or help me with my flight and hotel changes, right?? Wrong!? According to your cruise contract, they don?t have to do anything!? That said however, most of them will do something to help you.? It may not take care of all of your needs though.

This past example was if the weather was going to interrupt the cruise, but what if you live in the Midwest and a major snowstorm shuts down the airports all around you.? You thought you planned well because you were flying to Miami the day prior to your cruise, but all of a sudden you have 15 inches of snow, the roads are closed, the airports are closed and you can get out until at least tomorrow afternoon ? too late for your cruise departure.? Now what?? Is it the cruise line?s responsibility to take care of you then?? Only if you purchased your flights from them.? If not, you?re out of luck!

I have run into situations where my clients from NYC couldn?t get out on the day they were scheduled due to an impending hurricane.? The airlines worked with them to switch their flights either earlier or after the storm, but why should the cruise line be responsible to do anything?? Weather can and does happen everywhere so you need to be prepared.? If you are going on a land based vacation, there are workarounds to the problems of delays, but a cruise ship isn?t going to wait a day because you can?t get there on time.? They also are not going to refund your money if you don?t make it, for whatever reason.? This is why they and we encourage travel insurance.

I always look for a ?cancel for any reason? clause in the policy.? You never know when something will come up to make you miss your vacation.? An illness or an injury in many cases will be covered, but what if you lose your job and can?t afford to go or if the boss says they can?t give you the time off?? What if you simply change your mind?? Maybe a friend said they were going to go too and then they couldn?t anymore.? Maybe you just weren?t interested in that itinerary any longer.? With a ?cancel for any reason? provision, you can cancel.? Some policies offer this through the coverage.? For example, Holland America has this built in to their policies.? If I get the standard coverage and then cancel, for any reason, I am automatically refunded a certain percentage.? If I get the premium coverage, I get a larger refund.? No claims to file, no nothing, just a refund.? Others, like Disney, have you file a claim and if the insurance company finds it is not a covered reason, Disney will give you a credit for the full amount of the penalty towards a future sailing.

As I mentioned before, the cruise lines are not required to do anything.? Have they made exceptions in the past?? Of course they have!? But do you want to rely on your charm and possible goodwill in their part to cut your losses?? Having insurance gives you piece of mind if something goes wrong.

I mentioned earlier that out of 28 cruises I have used insurance once.? Let me tell you my story.? On our very first cruise, my agent added insurance (without me asking) and I didn?t notice it until we got our cruise documents or the final confirmation, I forget which, but I just left it there.? I thought it was stupid to have it, but it wasn?t that much so I was fine with it.? When I made the final payment, everyone in my family was doing well, no problems to speak of.? A month before sailing, my dad came out of remission from leukemia and started getting sick again.? They started chemo at that time but it wasn?t working.? The day I got on the ship, he was taken to the hospital, but the doctor though it was ok for me to go, it would be a long time before anything worse happened.? Four days into the cruise I got the call I was dreading ? come home now!? I got off the ship in St. Thomas and got on the next flight home only to arrive too late.? My airfare, the hotel in San Juan, food, expenses and the missed time on the cruise were all refunded to me.? I will always get travel insurance and I recommend it to my clients.? You never know what could happen.

Facebook is mishandling its crisis, experts say

Jim Urquhart / Reuters

Here I am! Wall Street is wondering where Facebook Chief Executive Officer Mark Zuckerberg is as its stock languishes at half its debut price. PR experts say he needs to show leadership or find someone who will.

By Roland Jones, NBC News

?Where is Mark Zuckerberg?

The question was posed rather forcefully by CNBC host Jim Cramer last week as the social network?s share price continued to plunge and news broke that an early Facebook investor, Peter Thiel, had sold $400 million worth of stock in the company.

The drop in the value of Facebook since May has caused huge concern about the company on Wall Street, and media outlets have even called for the resignation of the company?s founder and CEO Mark Zuckerberg. Facebook shares were trading at around $19 recently, about half?their $38 price when they went public on May 18.

Cramer?s query echoes a broader feeling on Wall Street about the problems now bedeviling the popular social networking company: With the value of its shares down over 50 percent since its highly anticipated IPO, is the company making a hash of the public relations disaster it is now facing; and, just as important,?why has Zuckerberg remained quiet about the state of the company?

Facebook is in crisis, and in a crisis a company?s CEO should be front and center, acknowledging the key issues, apologizing to those affected and giving a commitment to not letting an incident happen again, said Larry Chiagouris, a marketing professor at Pace University?s Lubin School of Business.

?The company needs to make the investment community comfortable that it has people at the top that are serious and determined to make profits,? he said.

?The wonderful thing about the stock market is, in the final analysis, the price of something tends to move toward its real value, so if there really is value in Facebook beyond its current price, the management team has failed to communicate that to investors effectively,? Chiagouris added.

Increasingly, investors are asking if Facebook?s problems are more profound than simply a swooning stock price.

Technical glitches marred Facebook?s first day of trading on the Nasdaq stock market in May, leading to complaints of slow order confirmations and too many shares offered at too high a price. Lawsuits against Facebook and its underwriting banks followed, and Facebook?s share price hasn?t traded anywhere near its $38 offering price since then.

Facebook?s IPO was expected to be one of the biggest stock offerings to ever hit Wall Street, and the company?s offer price?valued the company at $104.2 billion, making it the largest company to go public in the U.S. by market capitalization.

Investors? love for Facebook drove interest in its IPO to extreme levels, and the same herd mentality is now working in reverse, said Chiagouris.

?[Facebook?s stock price] will eventually get to a point where its valuation is unrealistic,? he said. ?To turn that decline around, Facebook has to do a major move -- one would be to replace top management.?

While Mark Zuckerberg is clearly inventive, no one will ever say that he is an effective businessman, Chiagouris said. The company needs to turn the reins over to people who are ?adult? and not beholden to Zuckerberg, he added.

?Facebook has one thing that people want: The largest community in the world. That?s a wonderful asset, but they?re sitting on that asset and they haven?t figured out how to monetize it yet,? Chiagouris said. ?Facebook needs people who are savvy at monetizing an asset, and that would probably not include most of the top managers who are there now.?

Facebook?s Chief Operating Officer Sheryl Sandberg has long been seen on Wall Street as Facebook?s ?adult? executive, having spent years as a senior executive at Google. But Sandberg has yet to demonstrate any independence at the company, Chiagouris said, and despite her appointment to Facebook's seven-person board last June the company?s stock price has continued to slide.

When it comes to handling a crisis, Facebook?s management team has done a poor job, public relations experts say.

As a social media company, Facebook?s image is its most vital asset, said Mario Almonte is a partner at a New York-based Herman & Almonte Public Relations.

?Once MySpace lost its image, it lost its cool factor,? Almonte said. In the same way, Facebook is having an image problem, and this time it?s with Wall Street investors.

The main problem is Zuckerberg, Almonte said.

?He?s locking himself in a room somewhere and refusing to talk to anyone,? he said. ?I think he needs to swallow his pride and bring in experienced people who understand Wall Street and understand the nature of investing and the politics of Wall Street, because a lot of this is about perception.?

?Zuckerberg needs to step up to the microphone and assure them he is working on a strategy to make Facebook profitable for them - and then he must bring in better financial and marketing experts than himself to develop a clear strategy for transforming Facebook into a profitable enterprise,? he added.

Investors have grown skeptical of the company?s ability to communicate its plan to reverse slowing revenue growth and make money from mobile devices -- a channel of strong user growth.

Google is an example of a technology company that got its advertising business right, Almonte said, because ?the advertising is there, all around the user, but it never gets in the way of the clean, efficient user experience.??

?

"If people had known that [Peter] Thiel would be unloading stock, obviously they wouldn't be buying stock," says Jim Cramer. "Where's the outrage?"

How often do you use Facebook?

Christie's blunt style tested in convention speech

(AP) ? With a rowdy fist-pump, blunt and brash New Jersey Gov. Chris Christie lit a fire Tuesday night under the Republican National Convention, labeling Democratic President Barack Obama part of the complacent status quo.

"It's been easy for our leaders to say not us, and not now, in taking on the tough issues. And we've stood silently by and let them get away with it," the first-term Republican governor said with a rock star's rasp during the keynote address. "But tonight, I say enough."

His mission was to make the case against Obama and fire up a convention delayed in its start by a tropical storm.

Like a coach before a football game, Christie implored the thousands inside the Tampa Bay Times Forum to rally behind GOP nominee Mitt Romney and his running mate, Paul Ryan.

"Everybody stand up. There's no time left to waste," the outspoken former prosecutor shouted.

Judging by the thundering cheers inside the arena, Christie hit his mark. That outspoken style made him a Republican Party star and helped earn him the plum, prime-time speaking gig.

He rocketed up the GOP ranks in 2009, winning the Democratic-heavy Eastern state the year after Obama was elected and establishing a reputation as confrontational to big labor and public employees. Early in the GOP nominating campaign, Republicans uninspired by Romney aggressively urged Christie to seek the nomination.

New York delegate David Shimkin said he admired Christie's frankness. "He doesn't seem to have a filter. A lot of candidates don't do that," Shimkin said.

As keynote speaker, Christie was tasked with making the prime-time pitch for Romney, who remains something of a mystery to voters even though polls show him locked in a close contest with Obama.

Christie considered running for the nomination himself but months ago decided to endorse Romney, who made a personal entreaty for Christie's support as the GOP primaries were getting under way.

Christie on Tuesday waved off a published report that he had turned down an offer to be Romney's running mate because he didn't think Romney could win in November.

"Not only do I believe he can win, I think he will win," Christie told "CBS This Morning."

Temperamentally and stylistically the opposite of the buttoned-up Romney, Christie acknowledged in interviews that the former Massachusetts governor has work to do to close the sale with some voters, especially women.

"Mitt Romney's going to have to win this campaign. He's going to have to let the American people see who he is," Christie said on ABC's "Good Morning America," adding that Romney's choice Ryan as his running mate had brought more energy to the ticket.

After he toppled Democratic Gov. Jon Corzine in 2009, national Republicans embraced Christie for his tough talk on fiscal matters and for taking on public employee unions, especially teachers. Web videos of Christie berating teachers at town hall meetings quickly went viral, giving Christie a large national audience. Critics dubbed him "Gov. YouTube," suggesting he was more interested in getting publicity for himself than for improving New Jersey's finances.

Democrats warned that viewers shouldn't buy Christie's claim of a "Jersey comeback." They pointed to economic data showing the state still grappling with weak employment and high property taxes.

"Chris Christie is taking the stage in Tampa tonight to talk about his favorite topic: himself," state Assemblyman John Wisniewski told reporters during a conference call before the speech. "Gov. Christie's record in New Jersey is certainly not a model for our nation, and the people in Tampa should know that."

Maryland Gov. Martin O'Malley, chairman of the Democratic Governors Association and a likely 2016 presidential contender, went further, saying he expected Christie to deliver an "angry, Don Rickles keynote extolling the virtues of their candidate, Mitt Romney, who had one of the worst job creation rates in the nation."

Virgin lobbies for UK rail franchise rethink

LONDON (AP) ? Britain's opposition Labour Party urged the government on Monday to delay signing a major rail contract as Virgin Group boss Richard Branson led a last-minute campaign to regain rights to the franchise.

Branson's Virgin Trains has run the busy London to Scotland route since 1997. But the company was outbid when rival FirstGroup, the U.K.'s largest rail operator, offered to pay 5.5 billion pounds (US$8.7 billion) for the right to run the route for the next 13 years.

The Labour Party urged the Department of Transport to put the contract on hold until lawmakers return to Parliament and have a chance to scrutinize the deal.

Branson claimed FirstGroup bid too much for the contract and would be forced to raise fares and reduce the quality of service, allegations that FirstGroup denies.

"We just want the facts examined," Branson told the BBC. "We will fight very hard to try to defend our rights to continue to operate."

An independent online petition against the decision to award the franchise to FirstGroup has gained more than 140,000 signatures from the public. Petitions to the government that gather more than 100,000 signatures may be considered for parliamentary debate, if lawmakers propose that.

Virgin Trains has offered to operate the route for a few months on a not-for-profit basis to allow extra time for lawmakers to debate the decision.

The Department of Transport said the award was decided in a "fair and established process" and that it sees no reason to delay the signing of the agreement.

Ask.com parent to buy About.com for about $300M

(AP) ? The parent company of Ask.com says it has agreed to buy The About Group from The New York Times Co. for $300 million in cash.

Barry Diller's IAC/InterActiveCorp, which also operates the dating site Match.com, announced the deal late Sunday.

About.com provides information on a wide variety of topics and also operates ConsumerSearch.com and Calorie-Count.com. Content is written by paid experts known as guides.

IAC said the addition of About.com will help Ask.com's offering's stand out and more authoritative, while Ask.com's search technology will help direct more users toward About.com and boost its profits.

The Times purchased About.com in 2005 for about $410 million. About.com has suffered in the past year because of a change in the way Google handles search results. That change made About.com content harder to find.

Pistorius plays down 100m defence prospects

Oscar Pistorius on Tuesday played down his chances of defending his 100m Paralympic title, assessing that it could be the most open -- and fastest -- final in Paralympic history.

The 25-year-old South African, a triple gold medallist in the T44 100m, 200m and 400m in Beijing, made history earlier this month by becoming the first double amputee to compete at the Olympics.

But Pistorius said he would be happy for a medal of any colour in the 100m this time round, with the final likely to involve world record holder Jonnie Peacock and world champion Jerome Singleton.

Pistorius said he had been "more than impressed" with Britain's Peacock, who in June lowered the world record for single leg amputees to 10.85sec.

"He's a huge threat. But my personal opinion is that experience counts," he told a news conference at the Olympic Park.

"Guys like Jerome Singleton (of the United States, whom Pistorius narrowly beat in Beijing) have run 11.1 in the last year.

"He (Singleton) is a true professional, a very serious guy. He doesn't let competition get the better of him.

"He's going to be just as much of a challenge. He's one of the only athletes to beat me in the 100."

Event organisers have billed the T44 100m final as the race of the Paralympics, with predictions that all eight runners could break 11 seconds for the first time.

Pistorius said the development of athletes in the event since Athens and Beijing had been "phenomenal", particularly in terms of physique, while margins between runners are now measured in hundredths of a seconds, not seconds.

"There are six guys in my opinion or maybe someone else" would could win, he added.

"There isn't a favourite in the event and that's that. That makes it very exciting.

"The 100 is going to be a challenge for me... If I can finish in the top three I will be happy."

He added: "It's important to note that I haven't run a 100m personal best in five years. It's not really my event.

"As Jonnie and those guys focus on the 100, my focus is on the 400, on the complete opposite side of the spectrum when it comes to sprinting.

"I like to see the evolution of the event happening and if that means I'm not at the top of the event but the sport's getting quicker, that's OK with me."

Pistorius still holds the T43 100m world record -- for double-amputee athletes -- with a mark of 10.91 set in 2007, although American Blake Leeper equalled that time this year.

The South African comes into the Paralympics on the back of a semi-final appearance in the Olympic 400m before he anchored the South African quartet in the 4x400m relay.

The athlete, dubbed the "Blade Runner" because he runs on carbon fibre blades, said he was in form, despite suggestions that he may be tired after the Olympics.

"I have had 22 races this year. The Olympics was obviously very important, as are the Paralympics," he explained.

"In essence, we run internationally from May all the way through to September. I ran my second-fastest time last year in September. It doesn't really matter...

"I'm in the right shape... I feel in great condition to be able to perform here."

Customer Service and Social Media - Business 2 Community

Customer Service and Social Media - What You Need to KnowSocial media has made it possible for businesses to directly connect with their target audience and customers on a constant basis. Because of the ease of communication, your business will get a lot of valuable feedback from fans that you might not have otherwise. More people will speak up, and some of those people will have customer service requests for you. Here are some things you need to consider when it comes to customer service and social media.

Speed

When your customers contact you via social media with customer service-related issues, it?s because it?s easy and because they want a quick response. If they don?t get a speedy reply they might feel ignored. When you have more than one customer service issue to attend to, this doesn?t mean you always have to prioritize social media requests. You should, however, always respond as soon as possible if only to let the customer know that you?ve seen their post or received their message and are working on it.

Public vs. Private

Customer service requests that are posted onto your Facebook wall for all to see need to be taken very seriously, even the smallest. There is more at stake than just the satisfaction of that one customer. All of your fans will see your response. It will reflect on your brand and can potentially change public opinion about it. Remember that it?s crucial to show off exceptional customer service. Anything less can be off-putting and have negative consequences for your reputation.

Traditional Service

No matter how tech savvy your business is, you should never entirely replace traditional customer service channels with social media. There will always be some people who prefer to make a phone call to customer service rather than logging on to contact you. Traditional customer service channels should be treated just as importantly as social media, and social media shouldn?t necessarily be the priority. The urgency of the request, whether it was given via telephone or social media, should always be evaluated.

Fan Assistance

A great thing about social media is that your fans can help you with customer service. If someone posts a question, it?s likely that another fan will try to answer it for them (if they can). Even if a customer answers a question, you still need to respond, too. When you see fans responding to customer service inquiries, it?s a good sign that you have fans that are loyal to your brand. To boost engagement all around, encourage customers to collaborate with each other via social media.

FAQs

Every business has certain questions that they hear over and over again, and that?s why Frequently Asked Question (FAQ) lists exist. You could post a FAQ list on your Facebook page for easy reference, but you don?t necessarily have to. For engagement and marketing, it?s preferable for a fan to comment on your page. If they get their answers from a FAQ list, they?re less likely to engage with you directly. Fans can also view your Timeline and see past comments, and FAQs may already be answered there.

Historic Walking Tour #6: ME Helme House Furnishing Company

The front window of the 1904 M.E. Helme House Furnishing Company antique store hints at the great finds inside. (Photo, May 2012)

?? If you love antiques, then this stop on the walking tour of Historic Downtown Huntington Beach is for you!? It's not only chock full of treasures, the buildings themselves are true gems of Huntington Beach history.

? ?

? ? Part of the Helme-Worthy legacy in Huntington Beach, the M.E. Helme House Furnishing Co. building and adjacent Helme-Worthy residence were listed on the National Historic Register (#86003668) in 1987 and are undergoing loving restoration.

Directions to Walking Tour stop #6: Walk northeast up Main Street (away from the coast) and head left on Walnut Avenue.? Just a few steps down Walnut at Sixth Street sits the faded sky blue wooden, two-story commercial building of Huntington Beach's fourth mayor, Matthew Helme, and the goldenrod-colored Helme-Worthy house.??

Undergoing restoration, but still in business, the M.E. Helme buildng recalls the days of country roads, horse and buggy.? (Photo, May 2012)

?? Notes from the approved application to the National Historic Register (NHR) explain, "these two buildings retain their integrity of location, setting, design, workmanship, materials, feeling and association with Huntington Beach's early settlement period. Although the residence is simple in style, it is the oldest house in town. Both provide the only visual picture of early Huntington Beach and its settlement period."

? The M.E. Helme House Furnishing Company is "the only surviving commercial building with the original Western Falsefront architecture remaining in south and central Orange County."? Helme's furniture company sold practical and decorative furnishings for the growing frontier town.

?? ?? Constructed in 1904, the M.E. Helme House Furnishing Co. building sits adjacent to the 1880s Helme-Worthy residence, also undergoing restoration.? The Helme-Worth residence is well traveled, having been moved by mule team from the rural countryside between Santa Ana and Huntington Beach to its current location in 1903.? It is reported the house was previously owned by Charles Leatherman--who also shared ownership of the present day Longboard Restaurant & Pub at 217 Main Street (the oldest wooden building on Main Street).

Photographs thoughtfully posted by the family in the window of the Helme-Worthy residence document the original condition of the house in the early 1900s. (Photo, May 2012)

In the family

?? One of the happiest aspects of the buildings' current restoration is the fact it is being conducted by the great granddaughter of Matthew Helme, Susie Worthy, and her husband, Guy Guzzardo.? They run the antique store and live at the residence, a true link to the past.

Matthew Helme (center, front row) and the first Huntington Beach city council, then referred to as a board of trustees, circa 1909.? They appear to be keeping a close eye on someone out-of-view.? Matthew and Mary Josephine Helme

?? Matthew Helme and his wife, Mary Josephine, were prominent citizens both for bringing the? seaside village's first furniture company and also for Matthew's role in the community's development.??

?? The NHR application explains Helme "fought for incorporation, was elected to the town's first Board of Trustees (city council), worked to get that all-important commodity, water, functioning in a city system, helped to set up a modern fire department, helped set up the city manager system which still prevails, authored an ordinance setting up the sale of the city's first gas bonds, and introduced a substantial street paving and lighting program."

The attractions of Huntington Beach included a new $200,000 water system, oiled streets, and the annual Methodist conference.? In 1905, a lot went for $200 and up, and farm acreage anywhere from $100 to $500 an acre depending on the location.? (Image, Los Angeles Herald, May 21, 1905)

?? Helme was elected to the first board of trustees in a hastily organized write-in ballot election.? By the time of the elections of 1912 and 1916, Huntington Beach had fancy printed ballots and Helme was the highest vote getter.? His fellow trustees made him mayor in 1916.? Due to his efforts, "gas street lights were placed along Main Street to the city limits. That stretch of street was paved, as was Ocean Avenue from First Street to Twenty-third Street.? This act recognized the change in methods of transportation from street car, train, and buggy to automobile."

?? Helme's daughter, Amy, married Lawrence "Boots" Worthy in 1916, eventually making the Helme-Worthy house their home 1924.

?? The Tent City Company leased about 13 acres at the Methodist auditorium and grounds, Pecan and 12th Street, to host tent revivals, large groups and the Grand Army of the Republic (GAR).

Huntington Beach organizers had to order 100 more tents to add to the existing 250 and accommodate Civil War veterans who arrived at the annual encampment in 1910.? A group of 4,000 gathered in the Methodist auditorium to hear keynote speakers. (Image, Los Angeles Herald, August 20, 1910)

?? No small campsite, the early 1900s civil war veteran gatherings brought thousands to Huntington Beach.? The Los Angeles Herald reported the Tent City hosted a dance floor, fire pits, veteran speakers on topics such as "Prison life at Andersonville," and "heated prisoners of war meetings."? The 1910 encampment also featured a "sunbonnet drill" by "the ladies from the 'fruit and flower' city (Pomona)."

?? Bringing thousands of new visitors to camp at Huntington Beach, Helme both helped establish the makings of a town and continued to help put the young city on the map.

The historic Helme-Worthy complex comprises 513-515-517-519 Walnut Street and 128 Sixth Street in downtown Huntington Beach.? Stop at the M.E. Helme House Furnishing Co. antique store at 517 Walnut Street and meet one of our pioneer families. (Photo, May 2012)

Total Vibration ? Blog Archive ? Planning A Home Improvement ...

Hang your brooms up and off the floor. Over time, the bristles on the brush will become deformed and no longer clean well if the are on the floor. Hanging the brooms will extend their lifetime. You will end up replacing brooms less and you will save money by buying less frequently.

If you have decided to work on a new medium to large size project, first ensure that you have all of the steps written down. After this, you will want to examine exactly what kinds of materials and tools you will need. If you are missing anything, be sure to purchase it before starting.

You can make simple art for your wall by purchasing some solid colored picture frames and tearing out pictures from old children?s books. Illustrations from the likes of Alice in Wonderland, Wizard of Oz and so on are very popular. They make great old fashioned wall art, and add a touch of personality to your home.

Down-facing outdoor accent lighting is an easy way to emphasize the more attractive elements of your front lawn or walkway. When positioned in the branches of a large tree, this type of lighting can simulate natural light, such as that of the moon or a hint of sunlight on a dark day. It can also be used to showcase garden statues or lawn furniture.

You don?t have to throw out your old wicker patio furniture. Sure, it may be weathered, but you can make them good as new. Replace your old cushions, or sew a new cover for them. Buy some cheap spray paint in shocking black or elegant white and spray your wicker set in the chosen color. Make sure to wear a protective mask over your mouth for safety. This can make your patio set look good as new and give you a reason to spend the day outdoors.

You can make really neat one of a kind plant stands from old stools. You can buy some old stools from yard sales, garage sales or your local thrift shop. The older the better and the more unique your plant stand will be. Weathered stools that you use as a plant stand can add a touch of unique country to your home decor.

Adding accessories to your room can be a great way to make a space feel like your own. Infuse your own personality into your room by carefully choosing some accessories to your liking. Make sure not to go overboard with decorations because it can make a small room feel rather cramped.

Securely screw your bookcases and other tall furniture to your walls! Not only is this step an important safety precaution in fortifying your home for a potential earthquake, doing so might actually prevent a child or elderly person from knocking these tall items over on themselves and sustaining serious injuries.

If you are working on your own home improvement project involving laying brick, make sure you use brick ties in sufficient quantity. Brick ties are metal clips used to anchor bricks to the wall structure (wood studs or what have you) behind them. Many do-it-yourself types are seduced by the apparent sturdiness of bricks and fail to realize that they must be secured to the wall via brick ties.

If you live in an older home with its original fixtures, chances are you may need some major updates to keep the sinks and tubs looking fresh. Finding mint-condition vintage fixtures is time-consuming and expensive, but modern fixtures don?t quite jive with a vintage room. Instead, consider refinishing your porcelain, fiberglass, or cast-iron fixtures. The process is far more affordable and can be completed fairly quickly.

An easy, quick way to update your house with some home improvements is to start with your cabinet hardware. Whether you choose to update your bathroom or kitchen, changing the cupboard knobs, drawer pulls, and hinges can instantly change the look of the whole room.

The kitchen is usually the room that sells the place. Take a look around and see if there are any inexpensive things you can do to your kitchen to make it look recently update. Get rid of that wallpaper or add hardware to your cabinets. Do whatever is simple and quick, but effective. You will be able to mention the update in you listing and buyers like seeing that.

Home improvement really is a creative endeavor, but that does not mean it is only for professional or serious home improvers. This creative endeavor can be enjoyed by anyone of any improvement skill level. These tips were constructed to help those of all levels find their way into home improvement.

Strike fast bowler Dale Steyn was left out while several one-day specialists, including Dean Elgar, Robin Peterson, Wayne Parnell, Ryan McLaren and Lonwabo Tsotsobe were all included.

Paceman Jade Dernbach and spinner Samit Patel missed out.

Overcast conditions promised to assist seamers, which may have explained de Villiers's decision to field first.

Romney Wants Bernanke to Go but One of His Top Advisers Doesn't ...

Follow The Daily Ticker on Facebook!

He's been chairman of the Federal Reserve since February 2006, appointed by President George W. Bush and reappointed by President Barack Obama.

Some say Ben Bernanke helped to save the U.S. economy during the financial crisis that hit just months after he took over leadership of the Fed. Others say his policy of zero interest rates has failed to revive an economy which continues to grow too slowly to push unemployment below g 8 percent while hurting the dollar and stoking inflation.

Mitt Romney is in that camp, and yesterday he announced for at least a second time that he would replace Fed Chairman Bernanke if he won the presidency. Just two days before Glenn Hubbard, one of Romney's top economic advisors, said Bernanke should "get every consideration" to stay on at the Fed.

Romney "can't fire the Fed chairman" says Jim Bianco, president of Bianco Research, a financial research firm, "but he can choose to not reappoint him when his term ends." Bernanke's term ends on January 31, 2014.

Romney told Fox News this week that the Fed's bond-buying program under Bernanke, known also as quantitative easing, had not been "terribly effective" and he didn't support the Fed extending the program.

"Romney wants somebody like John Taylor (Stanford University economist) who would be more anti-quantitative easing, anti-accommodation?.so that this period of extreme monetary policy would come to a close" Bianco says.

The Fed has maintained a zero interest rate policy since late 2008 and has run two programs of quantitative easing. In the minutes of its last meeting, released earlier this week, the central bank board suggested more strongly than before that it could take additional action to revive the economy.

The minutes said that "many members judged that additional monetary accommodation would likely be warranted fairly soon" unless new data suggested "substantial and sustainable strengthening " of the recovery.

Bianco told The Daily Ticker's Aaron Task," "The odds of him (Bernanke) moving in September are higher than moving in October," so close to the election.

Ben Bernanke speaks in Jackson Hole, WY next Friday and the Fed policy makers meet again on September 12.
