WTTC: Business Travel Research ? Views On Tourism

Business Travel ? a Catalyst of Economic performance

Business travel has accounted for one third of growth in global trade over the past decade, improved global corporate productivity tenfold and created millions of jobs worldwide, according to this special study undertaken by Oxford Economics on behalf of WTTC.

The research, launched in May 2011 showed that:
? Growth in business travel from 2000 ? 2007 helped create over 40 million jobs through increases in trade and productivity representing 20% of the growth in global employment over the same period.
? Global business travellers believe that 50% of their prospective customers are converted to new customers with an in-person meeting compared with 31% without such a meeting.
? If business travel were cut by 25% for two consecutive years, global GDP would be 5% lower than would otherwise be the case after a five-year period resulting in 30 million fewer jobs than forecast under baseline assumptions for the same period ? an average loss of 1% of global employment.
? Business travel improves corporate productivity yielding a return on investment of 10:1.
? Business travel is integral to international trade and it is estimated that one third of global trade over the past decade has been driven by international business travel.

A special focus on Asia was launched in October 2011. This showed that Business Travel is even more important in terms of driving economic growth in Asia than in other regions of the world.

Making medication alerts in electronic medical record systems more useful and usable

Making medication alerts in electronic medical record systems more useful and usable [ Back to EurekAlert! ] Public release date: 29-Mar-2012

INDIANAPOLIS A study by Regenstrief Institute and U.S. Department of Veterans Affairs investigators provides the first in-depth look at how health care providers react to medication alerts generated by electronic medical record systems. The researchers plan to use this information to improve the design of medication alerts and diminish the phenomenon known as alert fatigue, where providers can become desensitized and may start unintentionally ignoring some important warnings.

For this study, the researchers observed providers as they treated patients to learn about the strengths and weaknesses of medication alerts.

Medication alerts provide the health care team with computer-generated information on a variety of drug-related issues. Among the most common medication alerts are warnings about patient allergies, drug interactions and duplicate prescriptions. The alerts, critical to patient safety, can be triggered by many factors including the prescription of a new medication or a change in a patient's laboratory test results.

But health care providers may experience alert fatigue and unintentionally overlook important alerts if the electronic medical record system generates too many medication alerts; if alerts do not apply to the patient (for example, warning about a drug the patient has already been taking without problems); or if the alert provides too much extra information. The goal is to develop alerts that aid healthcare providers more effectively and enhance patient safety.

"Prescribers' Interactions With Medication Alerts at the Point of Prescribing: A Multi-Method, In Situ Investigation of the Human-Computer Interaction" appears in the April 2012 issue of the International Journal of Medical Informatics.

"As a human factors research scientist, I am interested in learning how to improve the usability of electronic medical records systems so doctors, nurses and pharmacists can work more effectively. I also am interested in finding ways to make health care delivery safer for patients," said Regenstrief Institute investigator Alissa Russ, Ph.D., a research scientist with the Center of Excellence on Implementing Evidence-Based Practice at the Richard L. Roudebush VA Medical Center in Indianapolis. She is first author of the study and is an adjunct assistant professor of pharmacy practice at Purdue University.

During the study, 320 medication alerts were generated by an electronic medical record system as 30 doctors, nurse practitioners and pharmacists treated 146 patients in a variety of outpatient clinics. The study authors observed and analyzed factors that influenced how health care providers perceive, interpret and respond to alerts. The authors identified nine factors that influence prescribers as they encounter alerts, providing a detailed description of 44 components that contribute to these factors.

The researchers found that prescribers were sometimes unsure why an alert was appearing, and they also determined that alert designs were more pharmacist-oriented than physician- or nurse practitioner-oriented, in spite of the fact that doctors and nurse practitioners were the principal prescribers.

"Too many alerts and overly detailed alerts are a common source of frustration across electronic medical record systems," Dr. Russ said. "Unless we improve medication alerts so they contain information that users need to make decisions, the problem of alert fatigue will grow as EMR systems expand beyond single hospitals and share more data."

"When interface usability, workflow integration, and potential information overload are addressed, electronic medical records have a tremendous advantage over paper records, such as rapid accessibility by multiple providers, improved documentation, and implementation of computerized decision support, such as clinical reminders and medication alerts," said Regenstrief Institute investigator Jason J. Saleem, Ph.D., a research scientist with the Center of Excellence on Implementing Evidence-Based Practice at Roudebush VAMC. Senior author of the study, he is a human factors engineer specializing in the delivery of medicine care and an assistant research professor of electrical engineering and computer science in the Purdue School of Engineering and Technology at Indiana University-Purdue University Indianapolis.

###

Co-authors of the study, along with Dr. Russ and Dr. Saleem are Alan J. Zillich, PharmD; M. Sue McManus, Ph.D., NP and Bradley N. Doebbeling, M.D., MSc. All authors are with the Roudebush VA Medical Center in Indianapolis. Dr. Zillich is an associate professor of pharmacy practice at the Purdue University College of Pharmacy. Dr. Doebbeling is a Regenstrief Institute investigator and professor of medicine at the Indiana University School of Medicine.

The International Journal of Medical Informatics study was funded by the U.S. Department of Veterans Affairs.

Currently Dr. Russ is leading a team that has created new, experimental designs for alerts based on these research findings. Redesigned alerts are being evaluated with simulated patient cases in the VA Health Services Research and Development's Human-Computer Interaction Laboratory at the Roudebush VAMC.

Precious Metals - Gold - Silver - Coins - Bullion - IRA - 401K - Invest ...

Within the next decade, many financial experts predict that the U.S. dollar will more than likely lose all of its purchasing power. Millions of Americans that currently depend on programs such as Social Security and unemployment benefits will experience a rude awakening. These government entitlement programs are on the verge of vanishing.

Unfortunately, the wealth of many Americans will be virtually wiped out within the next few years. However, there will be a small majority of people who will become wealthy by investing in precious metals, such as gold and silver. ?Here are a few benefits of investing in gold and silver:

1. Precious metals can be easily liquefied.

Regardless of whether you have a silver or gold coin collection (or both); you can convert it into cash very quickly.

2. Silver and Gold are secure investments.

Over the past few years, stocks, bonds and other financial products have proven to be very risky investments. Unlike these investment products, gold and silver are tangible items. You can?t hold and feel the value of a company?s shares of stock.

When it comes to precious metals, you cannot create ?more? like you can with financial products because there is a fixed supply. ?A gold and silver collection has added value because the personal worth of a collection can be determined by its rarity, age, condition and the coin's metal content.

3. Precious Metals offer an assortment of ways to invest.

You can choose to collect proof coins, gold, silver or even American eagle proof coins ? it?s all up to you.

4. You don't have to be a savvy investor.

Investing in precious metals doesn't require extensive financial knowledge. All it takes is a little planning and research. Regardless of your age, investing in gold and silver is a wise investment.

For Best Results - Diversify Your Investments

Any good financial adviser will recommend diversifying your investments. For best results, you should have a mixture of gold or silver in your portfolio. When you diversify your investments, it will make your portfolio a lot stronger in the long run. Most of all, when you invest in precious metals, you're preserving your wealth and financial future.

Reach Your Top Business Goals With Self Improvement. | Free ...

It is a smart business decision to use self improvement for the purpose of creating a more successful business. If you read about various highly successful entrepreneurs and business executives in the corporate world, you will see a clear trend. They all do everything they can to improve their mental, psychological and emotional performance.

In order to create the perfect mindset, you must understand and implement certain principles for success. The foundation of your initial success must lie upon the skill of knowing how to overcome limitations which is derived from a mindset for success. Depending on what you are trying to accomplish, you could be faced with overwhelming obstacles. Don?t fall into the category of those that fail because they stop trying to succeed. Most of the time, achieving what you want in life is moving through stumbling-blocks that are in between where you are and where you want to go. To achieve your goals, always write them out in order to get there quickly. By specifically doing what needs to be done for each objective, you accomplish what you want to do.

If you are new to online business, then welcome aboard ? we are not, and we want to let you in on a little secret. Newcomers often have a tendency to get over involved emotionally with everything they do online.

We gladly report that we do make an effort to learn. IHowever, during this time you could lose customers, potential JV partners, clients and so on. Get into the habit of getting all the facts that are needed and available before firing off that email if that is what you decide to do. Understand what you are doing, why you are doing it and the possible consequences of your action.

One of the hardest things we can do, perhaps, is learning to focus on the positive and stay there. Having a negative outlook is a learned behavior. Do you think that children are naturally negative? Living in their small worlds, they are naturally happy beings. We learn to be negative in a number of ways, but that is not so important. Knowing what you are thinking all the time is more important. If negative thinking seems to be predominate for you, it is now time to change that. A positive thought can be found to replace each negative thought as they happen. It is simply how you look at it which is also a learned behavior.

It can be uncomfortable to take on self improvement, even when you are doing it to be more successful in business but it all becomes worth it when you achieve your goals. But eventually you will find that you have been rewarded in ways you could not have expected.

Never any need to wonder if you can effectively implement what you read about lawn mower reviews. What follows this is at lawn mower reviews as it is the main seat of information. Now, if you are truly interested to take your knowledge base to a different level, then camping tent reviews has to be seen.

Amazon billionaire finds Apollo 11's engines

NASA file

The five giant F-1 engines on Apollo 11's Saturn 5 rocket loom large during preparations for the 1969 launch from NASA's Kennedy Space Center. Amazon.com billionaire Jeff Bezos says his team has located the engines, which fell into the sea just minutes after liftoff.

By Alan Boyle

Amazon.com's billionaire founder, Jeff Bezos, says he's funded a successful effort to locate the mammoth rocket engines that sent the Apollo 11 mission on the first leg of its mission to the moon?? and now he's planning to bring them up from the Atlantic Ocean floor.

It's shaping up as the latest high-rolling undersea adventure, alongside film director James Cameron's dive to the deepest spot in the Pacific, British billionaire Richard Branson's Virgin Oceanic expedition?and the Deepsearch submersible project backed by Google's Eric Schmidt.

Bezos' effort plays off his longtime fascination with outer space ? a passion that is also driving his decade-old Blue Origin rocket venture. Like Blue Origin, the undersea recovery project is being funded from the dot-com billionaire's personal fortune.

Destined for museums
The five F-1 rocket engines were on the first stage of Apollo 11's Saturn 5 rocket, which dropped into the Atlantic just minutes after liftoff in 1969. In an online statement, Bezos acknowledges that the undersea artifacts, like other hardware associated with the space effort, still belongs to NASA ? and he imagines that one of the engines would go on display at the Smithsonian. But in today's announcement, he says he's asked NASA to consider having another engine sent to the Museum of Flight?? which happens to be in Seattle, Amazon.com's hometown.

Rocketdyne built more of the 18-foot-tall F-1 engines than were needed for the Apollo missions, and some of those surplus engines have been placed on display, either attached to Saturn stages or as standalone exhibits. One can be seen at the Smithsonian's National Air and Space Museum in Washington, for example, and there's another at the Smithsonian's Udvar-Hazy Center in Virginia.

The idea of recovering Apollo 11's engines has been debated for more than 10 years, ever since Project Mercury's Liberty Bell 7 space capsule was raised from the Atlantic seafloor in 1997, said Robert Pearlman, editor of the CollectSpace website and an expert on space history and collectibles. NASA and the U.S. Navy had a good idea where the Saturn 5's first stage splashed down, which probably served as a clue for Bezos' search, he said.

In his statement, Bezos said the engines were located using "state-of-the-art deep-sea sonar," but it's not yet fully clear whether the sonar operation was done using deep-diving underwater robots ? as was the case with the recent Titanic mapping project ? or strictly with surface equipment. A spokesman for Amazon.com told me that no further details about the project would be shared today.

Pearlman was particularly intrigued to learn that Bezos was already in discussions with NASA about the potential disposition of the rocket engines. "If I were a betting fellow, I would say that Bezos is closer to mounting an expedition than the statement seems to imply," he said. "Which is really cool."?

Lessons from Liberty Bell
Curt Newport, the underwater salvage expert who orchestrated the raising of Liberty Bell 7, said bringing up the engines would pose significant challenges. He assumes that the engines are among other pieces of debris from the Saturn 5's first stage that are spread across the sea floor. "The information I found suggested that [the stage] broke up due to aerodynamic forces before it hit the water," he told me.

Verifying that the engines are from Apollo 11 rather than a different Apollo mission would require checking parts numbers against NASA's database, he said. And bringing up the engines would not be a trivial task.

"If they're intact, they're like nine tons each," Newport told me. "That is not going to be easy to bring to the surface."

Bezos said in his statement that the condition of the engines was not yet known.

Here's the full statement from Bezos, via his Bezos Expeditions website.

"The F-1 rocket engine is still a modern wonder ? one and a half million pounds of thrust, 32 million horsepower, and burning 6,000 pounds of rocket grade kerosene and liquid oxygen every second. On July 16, 1969, the world watched as five particular F-1 engines fired in concert, beginning the historic Apollo 11 mission. Those five F-1s burned for just a few minutes, and then plunged back to Earth into the Atlantic Ocean, just as NASA planned. A few days later, Neil Armstrong stepped onto the moon.

"Millions of people were inspired by the Apollo Program. I was 5 years old when I watched Apollo 11 unfold on television, and without any doubt it was a big contributor to my passions for science, engineering, and exploration. A year or so ago, I started to wonder, with the right team of undersea pros, could we find and potentially recover the F-1 engines that started mankind's mission to the moon?

"I'm excited to report that, using state-of-the-art deep sea sonar, the team has found the Apollo 11 engines lying 14,000 feet below the surface, and we're making plans to attempt to raise one or more of them from the ocean floor. We don't know yet what condition these engines might be in ? they hit the ocean at high velocity and have been in salt water for more than 40 years. On the other hand, they're made of tough stuff, so we'll see.

"Though they've been on the ocean floor for a long time, the engines remain the property of NASA. If we are able to recover one of these F-1 engines that started mankind on its first journey to another heavenly body, I imagine that NASA would decide to make it available to the Smithsonian for all to see. If we're able to raise more than one engine, I've asked NASA if they would consider making it available to the excellent Museum of Flight here in Seattle. (For clarity, I'll point out that no public funding will be used to attempt to raise the engines, as it's being undertaken privately.)

"NASA is one of the few institutions I know that can inspire 5-year-olds. It sure inspired me, and with this endeavor, maybe we can inspire a few more youth to invent and explore.

"We'll keep you posted."

Brand Yourself To Highlight The Best | Business 2 Community

As a personal brand today, your online reputation is very important. Hiring managers, recruiters, business owners, clients, and the like, probably Google your name to see what comes up before they even consider hiring you.

This is why it?s essential for you to control your search engine results. You want to highlight the best things about you, and hide the things that are negative or that have nothing to do with you. Sharing a name with a criminal is unfortunate, but it?s even worse when people who Google your name assume that it?s you.

Personal brand management is critical to survive in the world today. Your career and job are at stake if you can?t control what comes out when Google searches of you.

But what if you can?t afford to hire someone to manage your online personal branding campaign? How do you control what results come up when people search for you?

Online reputation management

BrandYourself is the newest online reputation management website to help you fill the first page of Google with positive results about you. Founded by Pete Kistler and Patrick Ambron, the company began when Pete couldn?t get an internship because a drug dealer showed up in results when people Googled his name. Eventually, Patrick was able to fix Pete?s results using his background in SEO. And then they realized that there are probably millions of other people out there with the same problem.

So then BrandYourself was born. But unlike other online reputation companies, you don?t have to spend thousands of dollars to manage your search results. Actually, the basic product is free.

What the company does is empower you as an individual to personally manage your search results. It doesn?t just get results for you, but also teaches you what you can do to maintain those good results.

Personal search management

For anyone who considers personal branding important, this product can prove to be an invaluable tool. Personal search management is one of the best ways you can ensure that you get the job, get the client, and get the business.

With BrandYourself, you can bring out the best information out there about you, and push down the information that?s negative or not about you.

Perhaps you once got involved in a silly quarrel that ended up getting some media attention. Wouldn?t you want to hide those results from the public? After all, that was just a random incident, but since it got media attention, it is now coming up on the top of Google results whenever someone searches for your name.

Wouldn?t you rather highlight your best results, such as your LinkedIn profile or Twitter account? With the use of Brand-Yourself.com, you can easily and conveniently do this, and you can even track your progress in the site so you know if you?re getting the results you want.

Make sure that your online reputation doesn?t suffer due to being mistaken for someone else or an old incident that keeps coming up on Google when people search for you. Learn how to take control and manage your personal brand by using BrandYourself.

For Personal Branding Blog readers

I?m not getting paid by Brand-Yourself.com. In fact, I pay for the premium service 100% on my own. I?m not an affiliate. They haven?t even launched an affiliate program yet. So, here?s some fun for Personal Branding Blog readers ? The first 15 people to comment and RT the article will receive a promo code for 15% off the premium version of the system and a free 1 hour strategy session.

Everyone that RT?s the article will be entered to win a free lifetime premium membership on BrandYourself and we will choose 1 winner at the end of the week.

Pupfish, Downfish: Subterranean Tsunami Gives Vertical Shakes to the Water-Hole Home of Endangered Fishes

News | More Science

Watch never-captured footage of a seismic wave rocking the whole pool at Nevada's famed Devils Hole

basic-science, physics, biology, energy-sustainability, environment, evolutionU.S. National Park Service biologist Jeffrey Goldstein measures the water level in Devils Hole. Seismic waves from an earthquake 2,000 miles distant caused a tsunami to roll through the underground pool at Devils Hole in Nevada. Violent oscillations decimated the small breeding area of the endangered species of pupfish that live nowhere else on earth but in these hot waters. Image: Peter Byrne

On March 20 a National Park Service biologist named Jeffrey Goldstein and I descended a rocky incline into the mouth of Devils Hole, a collapsed cave in the Nevada desert 40 miles south of the visitor?s center in Death Valley. Thirty feet down, an arm of water extends out from a deep pool to cover a rock shelf the size of a Ping-Pong table with up to two and a half feet of hot water. This shallow recess is home to 100 much-studied adult Devils Hole pupfish, or Cyprinodon diabolis. Living nowhere else on the planet, the pupfish receive protection from human harm by force of federal law and padlocked gates.

Shortly after 11 A.M., Goldstein was imparting the 10,000-year history of Devils Hole and its piscine denizens to me when the water level began rising and sinking by quarter-inches, then inches, then feet. As we scrambled up the rocky incline, the pool was sucked out of the hole almost entirely with a giant gurgle. It rushed back in, dislodging a metal walkway over the shelf and climbing up the sides of the hole toward us. After a few more gargles and belches, the pool waters returned to a normal level. The rock shelf had been swept clean of vegetation and pupfish eggs.

?

Video: Seismic waves from an earthquake 2,000 miles distant caused a tsunami to roll through the underground pool at Devils Hole in Nevada. Violent oscillations decimated the small breeding area of the endangered species of pupfish that live nowhere else on earth but in these hot waters.

We later learned that the underground tsunami had resulted from seismic waves emanating from a 7.4-magnitude earthquake, 12 miles deep, near the Mexican state of Oaxaca, 2,000 miles distant. According to Kevin Wilson, the National Park Service's aquatic ecologist at Devils Hole, the tidal effects of earthquakes have been directly observed on only three occasions since a 1976 Supreme Court ruling preserved the Devils Hole pupfish by restricting agricultural pumping of the Amargosa Valley aquifer. "More people have walked on the moon than have witnessed the effects of an earthquake at Devils Hole," Wilson says.

[In April 2010, U.S. Geological Survey researcher Ambre Chaudoin captured a Devils Hole tsunami with cameras tightly focused on the bottom of the pool. This was the first video of such an event: Video Shows Baja Earthquake Created a Devilish "Mini-Tsunami" for Endangered Devils Hole Pupfish]

Goldstein and I captured the rare event with pocket-size video cameras, so you can share in our adventure. Even without the excitement of an underground tsunami as a backdrop, the history of Devils Hole and its pupfish residents is worth a revisit.

Isolated in the pool by retreating ice 10,000 years ago, the Devils Hole pupfish have long feasted on algae, small invertebrates and, occasionally, baby pupfish. The fish breed and lay their eggs in the shallow, 92 degree Fahrenheit water that submerges the rock shelf. The deep pool has been explored by human divers to a depth of 435 feet. The inch-long fish are known to dive down 24 meters, but they prefer to hang out on the shelf because it is covered with edible vegetation and receives occasional sunlight. Cables snake along the stone walls just above and connect to the instruments that monitor temperature and other environmental indicators. Divers count the fish twice a year. The population has ranged from 500 in the 1980s to a near catastrophic low of 38 in 2006 to 119 adults, at last count.

And what about the aftermath of our earthmoving adventure?

The walkways and instruments were repaired within hours. This type of periodic disturbance, Wilson says, is not a disaster for the fish; it resets the ecology of the pool, improving it over the long haul. Immediately after their food and eggs were swept away by the tides, the fish responded with a frenzy of mating. Environmental disaster, it seems, acted as an aphrodisiac

Apple ready to license its nano-SIM design for free, on one not-so-nano condition

Apple ready to license its nano-SIM design for freeIf you hadn't heard, there are two rival nano-SIM designs going around, but only room for one of them to become an industry standard. Nokia, Motorola and RIM sit together in one corner, and we've already covered why they think their design is superior. On the other side of the ring sits Apple, which has its own tactics for bringing ETSI, the European Telecoms Standards Institute, over to its way of thinking. According to a legal letter shown to FOSS Patents by a "perfectly reliable source", Apple is prepared to license its nano-SIM design royalty-free, so long as it becomes the new standard and all other nano-SIM patent holders reciprocate the gesture. Such a gambit may not appease Cupertino's rivals and it certainly doesn't address their technical concerns, but it might show that Apple isn't looking to profit out of this particular format war and is simply continuing its quest for greater clarity on FRAND licensing terms. Then again, it could all just be lawyer-speak.

99dresses Wants To Give Women An Infinite Closet

Screen Shot 2012-03-26 at 2.31.58 PMThe model for how women purchase clothing is essentially broken. Because it is an ever-changing status symbol and subject to trends, fashion not exactly like any other goods. For example, with furniture you buy a new couch or a bed and then you have one, you don't need another one or a different one two weeks later. Not so with dresses or shoes. In fact if many women, myself included, had their way, we'd never wear the same thing twice. But spending $$$ on something you'll only wear once isn't really economically feasible, for even the 1%ers among us.

Apple secures patent on multiple-arm, multiple-frequency antenna design

ImageIf not for Leap Day, Apple would've seen this one granted a year to the day after it was filed; as it stands, 365 days will just have to do. At any rate, Apple has not only managed to secure a patent this fine morning for an ejectable SIM tray, but also one for an antenna isolation apparatus. In simple(ish) terms, the patent details an antenna structure in a portable electronic device that's comprised of "first, second, and third resonating elements aligned along a common axis parallel to a ground plane," with a multiple-arm, multiple-frequency design taking shape. It's also pretty clear that the intention here is to reduce radio-frequency interference between the antennas -- something that'll prove increasingly important as wave support is added in future iPhones. Unfortunately, there's no word on whether this patent will allow AT&T-infused iPhone 5 handsets to display "7G" in the indicator bar.
