Description
The Diversity Outreach and Transfer Counselor serves as a representative of APU for student recruitment and under-represented student population outreach, specifically targeting transfer students, and also churches and communities in the Los Angeles and San Bernardino regions, partnering with the Diversity and Outreach Recruitment Counselor.

Examples of Duties
Make contact with local Christian leaders and pastors in order to build relationships in under-represented areas and offer speaking engagements for student and parent groups.
Builds relationships with local community college transfer counselors to update information, communicate process for students transferring to APU, and share opportunities available to students at APU.
Recruits prospective transfer students through group presentations, college fairs, personal interviews, campus tours, phone contacts and written correspondence.
Plans and coordinates recruitment to assigned territories
Significant local recruitment travel during fall recruitment season as well as steady spring local recruitment travel.
Weekend registration travels during spring recruitment season
Maintains regular contacts with every student on assigned roster to assist with completion of the application process to include:
Phone calls to applied, accepted, and confirmed students and parents.
Provides financial aid estimates and discussion regarding offer of financial assistance.
Provides transcript evaluations of previous coursework and discusses impact on meeting General Studies and Major requirements.
Provides counseling for academic coursework and provides students with a class schedule at varying events.
Brings closure to student files with one of the following results:
Acceptance of financial aid offer, tuition deposit and first bill payment.
Cancellation of file.
Assists student applicants with financial aid, application procedures, and pre-registration/ registration procedures and with any on campus departmental scholarships for which the applicant may be eligible.
Evaluates application files and makes preliminary recommendations regarding the admission decision for applicants in assigned geographic area.
Interfaces as necessary with various offices on campus to facilitate information regarding student files and admission decisions.
Participates in on-campus admissions events involving student recruitment and pre-registration.
Assists in advising undeclared majors and answers advising questions posed by faculty advisors, students and staff during registration.
Partners with DOR Counselor on diversity focused scholarships such as:
Dixon Scholars: Works with others from Church of God and our anonymous donor to coordinate applications for 2 full scholarships. This process includes meeting with a committee, reviewing applications, in person interviews, and presentation of award program on a Sunday.
Azusa Scholars: Working in coordination with the Office of Community Relations, Office of Ministry and Service, and Azusa Unified School District, manages the Azusa Scholars scholarship, requiring multiple visits to Azusa high schools, interviews, application reviews, and selection.
Multi-Ethnic Leadership Scholarships: Working with the Office of Multi-Ethnic Programs, recruits applicants to this student leadership program and scholarship. Hours are spent in rounds of interviews and reviewing applications.
Hire, train and manage Diversity and Outreach Recruitment Intern.
Serve as admissions staff liaison in campus-wide diversity initiatives, conversations and appropriate meetings.
Projects as assigned by the Director and Senior Director of Undergraduate Admissions.

Education
Bachelor's degree

Experience
Preferably 1-2 years of work experience either with diverse populations, in recruitment, sales or other relevant work.

Skills
Excellent oral and written communication skills. Word processing-computer skills. Competency in Excel, using filters, complex sorting, and creating pivot tables. Self-management/organizational skills. Need strong communication skills on a one-to-one basis, in person and on the telephone.

Mental Demands
Ability to work independently, present self in a professional manner and reflect the goals and standards of APU. Initiative and good judgment. Ability to keep information confidential. Ability to learn procedures and retain information. In agreement with the purpose and mission of Azusa Pacific University in providing a Christian-based higher education for its students.

Physical Demands
Requires repetitive motions and sitting at computer keyboard. Hearing and speaking on the telephone. Ability to conduct business at various offices on campus. Able to lift, pull, grasp, stoop to lower file drawers and reach to top of five-drawer file cabinets. Availability to travel throughout recruitment seasons as well as 2-3 weekends for pre-registration events in the spring and a week-long conference in June. Possess a valid California driver license. Able to lift 10-20 lbs.occasionally.
