Touring Jerusalem ? BUSINESS, INNOVATION ...

Our First day as ?Tourists?

Friday, the second to last day of our trip, was the first time we were ?tourists? in Jerusalem. ??Our days leading up to Friday had been filled with business meetings with all different types of people working and living within the Israeli economy and business sector.? However, Friday marked our first day as ?average Israeli visitors?.? We toured the Old City, walking throughout the Jewish Quarter, as our tour guide explained the history of Jews in the city of Jerusalem.? With just two quick days for touring, our tour guide managed to teach us about major events that occurred within the walls of the Old City and beyond.? However, we were not your average tourists.? We had spent the past week seeing and exploring Israel from a business perspective.? As we learned about the history and reflected upon our week in the modern business sector, we sat at the intersection of past and future.

Israel?s importance is obvious in a religious and cultural sense.? It is undeniable that Israel was an important place for past history, however for many people, it is less clear that Israel will be an important place of the future.? The week we spent in Israel made our class different from these ?many people?.? Through extensive meetings with the hi-tech sector of Israel, we immediately understood the importance of Israel in future years to come, an importance that exists deeper than religious and cultural views.? Israel is a place where unique entrepreneurship thrives and start-ups are commonplace.? Israelis are creative risk-takers who are not afraid to fail, and this courage leads them to developing the future technology of the world.

I have toured the Old City many times and all of those tours have come to blur together in mind.? This tour however was different. I was not solely focused on the history, but rather intrigued by how the history has created such a forward thinking, future- based country.? The Israelis we met with were not satisfied with what technology is today; they were looking to create the technology of tomorrow.?? My initial thought was that living in a historical city like Jerusalem would make the people living there stuck in the past, unable to look ahead.? What I learned through this past week and the tour we took on Friday is I could not have been more wrong.? The people of this city use their history as motivation to continue on into the future.
