Radio Rebel Review ? New Disney Channel Original Movie | The ...

Radio Rebel Disney Channel Original Movie

The Radio Rebel cast from left to right, Merritt Patterson as Stacy, Sarena Parmar as Audrey, Atticus Dean Mitchell as Gabe, Debby Ryan as Tara, and Adam DiMarco as Gavin.

Feb. 17th was the premiere of the new Disney Channel Original Movie (DCOM) ?Radio Rebel? starring, star of ?Jessie? and ?Suite Life on Deck,? Debby Ryan. So here is the premise? girl in high school has extremely popular radio show that everyone in school listens to. She herself is very shy and to herself, yet her Radio Rebel personality is a free spirit and not at all nervous. After some flash mob-esque (Side note: doesn?t adding esque to the end of a word make it sound so much better!?) events go down on her campus because of what she says on her show, her principal becomes a Radio Rebel hunter and wants her expelled! (Say it ain?t so!) Since she doesn?t reveal herself, Prom is cancelled? which, of course, upsets the popular girl. I don?t want to say too much, but throw in a great best friend, an awesome and down to earth mom, as well as a cool DJ and some romance and you, my friend, have a wonderful Disney Channel Movie!

I found it very enjoyable. Debby was wonderful in it, adding just the right amount of comedy and heart for a DCOM. The only part that I really could have done without, were her two guy BFF?s. They seemed like they were put there for comic relief, but it wasn?t needed. It came off as like they were trying way too hard. Other than that though, it was great.

Not only is the movie very good, but the soundtrack is great as well. Now, it is not what you would expect from Disney Channel, but I almost enjoyed it better then the High School Musical-esque (see, SO much better with the esque!) music of Disney Channel yesteryear. It has a very nice pop-rock flare going for it, which I thoroughly enjoy. I suggest ?Now I Can Be the Real Me? and ?Brand New Day?. Check it out on iTunes for only 7.99?for 14 songs and a digital booklet! That?s what I call a bargain!

Overall, the movie is so lunarious (I have decided that I am now grading movies I review in Zenon: Girl of the 21st Century slang? gotta love it!). What did you think of the movie? How would you grade it (If you?re using a number scale, let 10 be Tiger Cruise and 1 be Quints)? Let me know, in the comments below! And until next time? Have A Magical Day!

Marshal Knight is a GIGANTIC Disney fan! He lives only an Hour and a half away from Walt Disney World resort and is a sophomore in High School. Japan emperor has successful heart surgery

Japan's Emperor Akihito underwent on Saturday a successful heart bypass operation and doctors said they hoped he would be able to resume the normal lifestyle he wished for.

Akihito, 78, has been receiving treatment for heart problems for the past year and doctors decided last week that he needed a coronary bypass operation.

Akihito ascended to the throne after the death of his father, Hirohito, in 1989. He has spent much of the past two decades working to heal the wounds of a war waged across Asia in his father's name and helped bring the monarchy closer to ordinary citizens.

"As far as operations go, it probably could not have proceeded any better," Minoru Ono, one of the doctors at the University of Tokyo Hospital who performed the four-hour operation, told reporters.

The doctors said they would keep a close watch on the emperor's conditions until he is deemed fit to leave hospital.

"The operation's success will be measured by whether the emperor can regain the normal lifestyle he had wished for. We are looking forward to that day, but until then, we'll use the word success sparingly," said Juntendo University's Atsushi Amano, another surgeon who operated on the emperor.

Akihito checked into hospital on Friday and is expected to remain there for about two weeks for rehabilitation, they said.

Akihito had surgery for prostate cancer in 2003 and suffered stress-related health issues in late 2008. The following year, the royal agency said he would cut back on official duties such as speeches and meeting foreign dignitaries.

The latest surgery could prompt the royal agency to further limit the emperor's activities.

"Considering the fact that the emperor will not be getting any younger, we will continue to review the amount of duties he performs," said Ichiro Kanazawa, the Imperial Household Agency's medical supervisor.

Save for rare occasions, the Japanese imperial family is spared the intense public attention or media scrutiny that Britain's royals get.

But it serves as a comforting link with tradition at times of distress.

Five days after a devastating earthquake and tsunami struck northeastern Japan on March 11, Akihito made a rare public televised address and in April traveled to the disaster area with Empress Michiko.

Akihito's hospital stay last year gave Japan a rare opportunity to see his heir Crown Prince Naruhito, 51, step in for his father and perform public duties.

While Akihito's reign was defined by his reconciliation efforts, it is less clear what role the scholarly Naruhito may play, though royal commentators expect him to continue his father's efforts to reach out to ordinary citizens.

Movie Review: 'Ghost Rider: Spirit of Vengeance' ? CBS Philly

By Bill Wine
KYW Newsradio 1060

Nicolas Cage just couldn?t give up the Ghost Rider.? Guess we?ll have to do it.

Cage returns as the title character plus one in Ghost Rider: Spirit of Vengeance, a superhero-thriller followup to Ghost Rider that?s based on the Marvel comic of the same name.

1c2bd Movie Review: Ghost Rider: Spirit of VengeanceCage stars in this fantasy-action thriller in the double role of cursed Johnny Blaze and his flaming skull alter ego, Ghost Rider ? whose noggin bursts into flame when he?s sucking the soul out of an evildoer.? It?s the same pair Cage played in the surprisingly interesting and respectable 2007 original, one which was commercially successful enough to beg a second helping.

Unfortunately, this time not only is the element of novelty missing, but this outing displays the nearly inevitable sequelitis quality dropoff, making it seem rather obvious that they?ve now made one installment too many.

Blaze is a stunt biker who made a pact with the devil and sold his soul to save his dying father.? The Rider, whom he unwillingly transforms into when in the presence of evil, is the devil?s fiery bounty hunter, a curse that Johnny still struggles with.

He remains a metaphysical force with a flaming skull for a head, riding a motorcycle with wheels of fire, who has decided to use his powers to defend the innocent as a vengeful vigilante of justice.

Blaze is hiding out in self-imposed exile in remote Romania when the sequel begins, and is recruited by a secret sect of the church to save Danny, a young boy played by Fergus Riordan, from a demonic conspiracy.

In this adventure, Johnny Whitworth plays Roarke Carrigan, a human who is turned by the Devil into a supernatural critter named Blackout, who is given the abilities to do battle with Ghost Rider.

Idris Elba plays Moreau, an alcoholic rebel and biker with whom Blaze teams up in an effort to save Danny and perhaps rid himself of his curse once and for all.

Mephistopheles ? played this time by Ciaran Hinds, who replaces Peter Fonda from the prior outing ? is attempting to take over the body of his son on the lad?s birthday.

For directors Mark Neveldine and Brian Taylor, Ghost Rider: Spirit of Vengeance is as much a reboot as a sequel.? It?s been shot, edited, acted, and scored as if everyone involved realizes just how shallow the subject matter is.

The directors have done a lot more location shooting than was done on the first film, and considerable additional stunt work as well.

But this time, the CGI fiery-skull effects don?t contribute to the story: they are the story.? And a yawningly flimsy one at that.

The uncaged Cage, who brought an admirably restrained version of his oddball style and dry humor to the first installment, has been prolific since Ghost Rider but has appeared in far more downs (National Treasure: Book of Secrets, Next, Bangkok Dangerous, The Sorcerer?s Apprentice, Trespass) than ups ( Knowing, Kick-Ass).

In this outing, he does what he can with his self-consciously idiosyncratic line readings, but he?s working much too hard to distract us from the realization that this time there?s no there there.

The juvenile screenplay by David S. Goyer, Scott Gimple, and Seth Hoffman showcases the title character?s supernatural exploits in a straightforward protect-an-innocent-child plot.

But, unlike its predecessor, Ghost Rider: Spirit of Vengeance does not boast the courage of its kooky comic-book convictions.? We?ve got Ghost Rider again and plenty of vengeance.? But spirit??? Nowhere to be found.

So we?ll light a fire under 1? stars out of 4. The sorta-superhero sorta-sequel, Ghost Rider: Spirit of Vengeance, once again presents Nicolas Cage and a flaming skull as a match made in hell.?? This time we agree.

Climate change threatens tropical birds

ScienceDaily (Feb. 16, 2012) ? Climate change spells trouble for many tropical birds -- especially those living in mountains, coastal forests and relatively small areas -- and the damage will be compounded by other threats like habitat loss, disease and competition among species.

That is among the conclusions of a review of nearly 200 scientific studies relevant to the topic. The review was scheduled for online publication this week in the journal Biological Conservation by ?a?an ?ekercio?lu (pronounced Cha-awn Shay-care-gee-oh-loo), an assistant professor of biology at the University of Utah.

There are roughly 10,000 bird species worldwide. About 87 percent spend at least some time in the tropics, but if migratory birds are excluded, about 6,100 bird species live only in the tropics, ?ekercio?lu says.

He points out that already, "12.5 percent of the world's 10,000 bird species are threatened with extinction" -- listed as vulnerable, endangered or critically endangered by the International Union for Conservation of Nature (www.redlist.org).

?ekercio?lu's research indicates about 100 to 2,500 land bird species may go extinct due to climate change, depending on the severity of global warming and habitat loss due to development, and on the ability of birds to find new homes as rising temperatures push them poleward or to higher elevations. The most likely number of land bird extinctions, without additional conservation efforts, is 600 to 900 by the year 2100, ?ekercio?lu says.

"Birds are perfect canaries in the coal mine -- it's hard to avoid that metaphor -- for showing the effects of global change on the world's ecosystems and the people who depend on those ecosystems," he adds.

?ekercio?lu reviewed the scientific literature relevant to climate change and tropical birds with Richard Primack, a biologist at Boston University, and Janice Wormworth, a freelance science writer and ecological consultant in Australia.

Wormworth and ?ekercio?lu coauthored the 2011 book, "Winged Sentinels: Birds and Climate Change." The new article is an updated condensation of that book and another 2011 book ?ekercio?lu coauthored, "Conservation of Tropical Birds."

The review was funded by the Christensen Fund -- which finances community-based conservation projects -- the University of Utah and National Science Foundation.

Putting the Heat on Tropical Birds

Scientists expect climate change to bring not only continued warming, but larger and-or more frequent extreme weather events such as droughts, heat waves, fires, cold spells and "once-in-a-century" storms and hurricanes. Birds may withstand an increase in temperature, yet extreme weather may wreck habitats or make foraging impossible.

"The balance of evidence points to increases in the numbers of intense tropical hurricanes (though hurricane frequency could decrease overall)," ?ekercio?lu and colleagues write. "This would predominantly affect tropical bird communities, especially species living in coastal and island habitats."

?ekercio?lu says it is difficult to predict how habitat loss, emerging diseases, invasive species, hunting and pollution will combine with climate change to threaten tropical birds, although "in some cases habitat loss [from agriculture and development] can increase bird extinctions caused by climate change by nearly 50 percent."

In addition, "compared to temperate species that often experience a wide range of temperature on a yearly basis, tropical species, especially those limited to tropical forests with stable climates, are less likely to keep up with rapid climate change."

The researchers say studies indicate:

-- Climate change already has caused some low-elevation birds to shift their ranges, either poleward or to higher elevations, causing problems for other species. Global warming helped rainbow-billed toucans move from Costa Rican lowlands to higher-elevation cloud forests, where they now compete for tree-cavity nest space with the resplendent quetzal. The toucans also eat quetzal eggs and nestlings.

-- Birds with slower metabolisms often live in cooler tropical environments with relatively little temperature variation. They can withstand a narrower range of temperature and are more vulnerable to climate change.

-- Climate change may spread malaria-bearing mosquitoes to higher elevations in places like Hawaii, where the malaria parasite can threaten previously unexposed birds.

-- Longer and less regular dry seasons and droughts expected during global warming may reduce populations of tropical birds that often time their breeding with wet seasons when food is abundant.

?ekercio?lu acknowledges that "not all effects of climate change are negative, and changes in temperature and precipitation regimes will benefit some species. ? Nevertheless, climate change will not benefit many species."

Scenarios for Extinction

A 2008 study by ?ekercio?lu and late climatologist Stephen Schneider calculated 60 scenarios of how tropical land bird extinction rates will be affected by various possible combinations of three variables: climate change, habitat loss and how easily birds can shift their range, meaning move to new habitat. Citing those estimates, the new review paper says that "depending on the amount of habitat loss, each degree of surface warming can lead to approximately 100 to 500 additional bird extinctions."

The Intergovernmental Panel on Climate Change has predicted 1.1 to 6.4 degrees Celsius (2 to 11.5 degrees Fahrenheit) of global warming of Earth's surface by the year 2100, which ?ekercio?lu's study converted into a best case of about 100 land bird extinctions and a worst case of 2,500.

He says the most likely case now is considered to be 3.5 C (6.3 F) warming by 2100, resulting in about 600 to 900 land bird species going extinct. These estimates are conservative because they exclude water birds, which are 14 percent of all bird species.

Because they don't travel far, "sedentary" birds "are five times more likely to go extinct in the 21st century than are long-distance migratory birds," says ?ekercio?lu.

The review found:

--Tropical mountain birds are among the most vulnerable to climate change. Warmer temperatures at lower elevations force them to higher elevations where there is less or no habitat, so some highland species may go extinct.

-- Climate change and accompanying sea-level rise pose problems for birds in tropical coastal and island ecosystems, "which are disappearing at a rapid rate," ?ekercio?lu and colleagues write. Many such ecosystems already have been invaded by non-native species and exploited by humans.

-- Birds in extensive lowland forests with few mountains -- areas such as the Amazon and Congo basins -- may have trouble relocating far or high enough to survive.

-- Tropical birds in open habitats such as savanna, grasslands, scrub and desert face shifting and shrinkage of their habitats.

-- Rising sea levels will threaten aquatic birds such as waders, ducks and geese, yet they often are hemmed in by cities and farms with no place to go for new habitat.

-- Tropical birds in arid zones are assumed to be resilient to hot, dry conditions, yet climate change may test their resilience by drying out oases on which they depend.

More Research and Conservation Needed

To better understand and reduce the impact of climate change on tropical birds, ?ekercio?lu urges more research, identification and monitoring of species at greatest risk, restoration of degraded lands, relocation of certain species, and new and expanded protected areas and corridors based on anticipated changes in a species' range.

"Nevertheless," ?ekercio?lu and colleagues write, "such efforts will be temporary fixes if we fail to achieve important societal change to reduce consumption, to control the emissions of greenhouse gases and to stop climate change."

"Otherwise," they add, "we face the prospect of an out-of-control climate that will not only lead to enormous human suffering, but will also trigger the extinction of countless organisms, among which tropical birds will be but a fraction of the total."
