Genetically engineered virus kills cancer, says study
Sixteen patients given a high dose of the therapy survived for 14.1 months on average, compared to 6.7 months for the 14 who got the low dose.
?For the first time in medical history we have shown that a genetically-engineered virus can improve survival of cancer patients,? study co-author David Kirn told AFP.
The four-week trial with the vaccine Pexa-Vec or JX-594, reported in the journal Nature Medicine, may hold promise for the treatment of advanced solid tumours.
?Despite advances in cancer treatment over the past 30 years with chemotherapy and biologics, the majority of solid tumours remain incurable once they are metastatic (have spread to other organs),? the authors wrote.
There was a need for the development of ?more potent active immunotherapies?, they noted.
Pexa-Vec ?is designed to multiply in and subsequently destroy cancer cells, while at the same time making the patients? own immune defence system attack cancer cells also,? said Kirn from California-based biotherapy company Jennerex.
?The results demonstrated that Pexa-Vec treatment at both doses resulted in a reduction of tumour size and decreased blood flow to tumours,? said a Jennerex statement.
?The data further demonstrates that Pexa-Vec treatment induced an immune response against the tumour.?
Pexa-Vec has been engineered from the vaccinia virus, which has been used as a vaccine for decades, including in the eradication of smallpox.
The trial showed Pexa-Vec to be well tolerated both at high and low doses, with flu-like symptoms lasting a day or two in all patients and severe nausea and vomiting in one.
The authors said a larger trial has to confirm the results. A follow-up phase with about 120 patients is already underway.
Pexa-Vec is also being tested in other types of cancer tumours. ? AFP/Relaxnews?

JPMorgan Upgrades Nike as ?China Turnaround Firmly on Track?

In 2012, China?once the juice that fueled Nike?s (NKE) share price?had become an impediment to the company?s share price. No longer, say analysts at JPMorgan.
Analysts Matthew Boss, Anne McCormick and Michael Joyce upgraded Nike to an overweight from neutral today, calling the stock a ?a multi-year core portfolio holding.? One of the big reasons for the upgrade: China is much less of a problem. The analysts write:
While China?has been NKE?s Achilles heel over the past year (macro, excess inventory in the channel, fit/color issues), management?s turnaround game-plan appears firmly on track?with stabilization targeted over the next 2-3 quarters and a FY14 return to growth likely in our view.
Importantly, every 10% of China sales growth (-11.2% in 2Q13 vs. +21% growth in FY11/2012) equates to $250M of incremental revenues (1% of total top-line growth) or $0.08-$0.10 of EPS accretion (China EBIT margins substantially above co. avg)?
While we are not modeling a turn overnight, management is pleased with initial progress citing +10% DTC sales and wholesale same-store-sales turning positive in 2Q as a potential leading indicator of encouraging trends to come.
Combine that with a ?robust product pipeline? and a ?laser focus on total shareholder return,? and the stock should hit $64, the analysts say.
Nike has gained 0.8% today to $55.01 and has jumped 19% during the past three months.

Editorial: iWatch app speculation is filler, not killer
Innovation is problem-solving. Radical innovation is seeing normalcy as problematic, and solving it. That level of invention, which solves a generally unrecognized problem to create a new product category, or user experience, can be difficult to recognize in the conceptual stage. A far-reaching idea can seem trivial if it solves routineness. Sometimes it takes the product itself, the manifested experience, to demonstrate how to rise above the customary. Email solved postal mail, which died another incremental death last week by announcing a proposal to end Saturday letter deliveries. Cell phones solved the disconnect between phones and the walking-around life. Mobile apps solved the gap between computers and cell phones. Perhaps HTML5 will solve apps.
So forgive me if I'm being small-minded, but Bruce Tognazzini's speculative manifesto about an Apple iWatch fails to make a convincing futurist case for the imagined device -- despite whipping up a whirlwind of attention. What is the future of wearable computing?

A scrapped plan for a golf course at the Ridgewood at Middlebury complex may yet return, but under the town's control.
First Selectman Edward B. St. John said that the proposal for a golf course at the residential development might make sense for the town in the future.
