An Egyptian judge convicted former president Hosni Mubarak of complicity in the killings of protesters during the uprising that ended his 30-year rule and sentenced him on Saturday to life in prison.

It was the first time a deposed Arab leader had faced an ordinary court in person since a wave of uprisings shook the Arab world last year, sweeping away four entrenched rulers.

Demonstrators outside the court, many of whom had been demanding the death penalty for Mubarak, greeted the verdict with fireworks and cries of "Allahu akbar (God is great)".

Soha Saeed, the wife of one of about 850 people killed in the street revolt that toppled?Mubarak on Feb. 11, 2011, shouted: "I'm so happy. I'm so happy."

Some people inside the court who had wanted a death sentence scuffled with guards, decrying the Mubarak-era judiciary. "The people want the judiciary cleansed!" they chanted.

One man held up a sign calling for?Mubarak to be executed, others chanted for a death sentence.

Judge Ahmed Refaat opened the proceedings by calling the start of Mubarak's trial on Aug. 3 a "historic day." He hailed Egyptians for removing the only leader many of them had known.

"The people of Egypt woke on Tuesday, Jan. 25, to a new dawn, hoping that they would be able to breathe fresh air ... after 30 years of deep, deep, deep darkness," he told the court.

Total silence fell over the courtroom in the moments before Judge Refaat announced his verdict. The crowd outside then erupted in joy. Anti-Mubarak demonstrators and a smaller crowd of his supporters threw stones at each other and at police.

The judge also sentenced Mubarak's former interior minister, Habib al-Adli, to life in prison. He sentenced Mubarak's two sons, Alaa and Gamal, to time already served after convicting them on some corruption charges and acquitting them on others. Six security officials were acquitted.

VERDICT ON THE "PHARAOH"

Many Egyptians are angry that the hated police force, blamed for many of the deaths in the uprising, and other pillars of Mubarak's rule have survived his downfall intact.

A helicopter had flown?Mubarak to the court on the outskirts of Cairo from the military-run hospital where he has been held in custody.

Egyptian state television said the prosecutor-general had ordered that?Mubarak be transferred to prison from hospital to serve his sentence. No details were immediately given. His co-defendants have been held for months in a Cairo prison.

Hundreds of police with riot shields and batons surrounded the police academy where the 10-month trial has been held.

"Enough talk, we want execution!" protesters chanted outside before the verdict.

Few Egyptians had expected?Mubarak would go to the gallows, although protesters have often hung his effigy from lamp posts.

"I want nothing less than the death penalty for Mubarak. Anything less and we will not be silent and the revolution will break out again," Hanafi el-Sayed, whose 27-year-old son was killed early in the uprising, said just before the verdict. He had traveled from Alexandria for the trial.

In a June 16 and 17 runoff, Ahmed Shafiq, an ex-air force chief like Mubarak, will face the Brotherhood's Mohamed Mursi.

Shafiq has called his former boss a role model. His Islamist rival says that if he becomes president he will ensure enough evidence is produced to keep?Mubarak behind bars for life.

"It is not possible to release Mubarak," Mr. Mursi told Reuters on Thursday. "I promise the martyrs [of the uprising] will retrieve their rights in full, God willing."

Numerous associations, unions, and religious organizations, including the American Psychological Association, the National Education Association, and the Anti-Defamation League, had filed briefs asking the court to declare the law unconstitutional.

?Congress? denial of federal benefits to same-sex couples lawfully married in Massachusetts has not been adequately supported by any permissible federal interest,? the court stated in its decision. ?DOMA does not formally invalidate same-sex marriages in states that permit them, but its adverse consequences for such a choice are considerable. Notably, it prevents same-sex married couples from filing joint federal tax returns, which can lessen tax burdens, and prevents the surviving spouse of a same-sex marriage from collecting Social Security survivor benefits.?

?In reaching our judgment, we do not rely upon the charge that DOMA's hidden but dominant purpose was hostility to homosexuality,? the court added. ?The many legislators who supported DOMA acted from a variety of motives, one central and expressed aim being to preserve the heritage of marriage as traditionally defined over centuries of Western civilization.?

?To conclude, many Americans believe that marriage is the union of a man and a woman, and most Americans live in states where that is the law today,? the court continued. ?One virtue of federalism is that it permits this diversity of governance based on local choice, but this applies as well to the states that have chosen to legalize same-sex marriage. Under current Supreme Court authority, Congress' denial of federal benefits to same-sex couples lawfully married in Massachusetts has not been adequately supported by any permissible federal interest.?

The court did not strike down Section 2 of the Defense of Marriage Act, which declares that ?no State, territory, or possession of the United States, or Indian tribe, shall be required to give effect to any public act, record, or judicial proceeding of any other State, territory, possession, or tribe respecting a relationship between persons of the same sex that is treated as a marriage under the laws of such other State, territory, possession, or tribe, or a right or claim arising from such relationship.?

The software maker signaled the makeover is nearly complete with Thursday's release of the final test version of Windows 8.

Windows 8 is considered to be the biggest change in decades to Microsoft's widely used operating system. The software displays applications in a mosaic of tiles and has been designed so it can run desktop, laptop and tablet computers.

PC sales have slowed in the U.S. as consumers delay replacements and instead buy mobile devices such as smartphones and tablet computers. The versatility of Windows 8 is expected to spawn a new generation of computers that are part laptop, part tablet.

The latest test version of Windows 8 is available in 14 languages and includes several improvements from a less-refined version released three months ago. The upgrades include more ways to connect to other Microsoft services, more security controls and more touch-screen features.

Microsoft Corp. hasn't announced when Windows 8 will go on sale yet. Most industry analysts expect the software will be available in September or October.

With Windows 8 looming, more prospective computer buyers may delay their purchases until the new operating system is available.

Microsoft is trying to discourage procrastination with a special promotion that begins Saturday in the U.S., Canada and more than 120 other markets. The program allows buyers of computer running on Windows 7 to upgrade to Windows 8 Pro, when it's available, for $14.99. Microsoft hasn't announced other prices.

NSAIDS Reduces Skin Cancer Risk | TopNews New Zealand

As per a research, which has been published in the journal Cancer, it has been revealed that aspirin, and other nonsteroidal anti-inflammatory drugs (NSAIDs) are said to be quite effective in preventing skin cancers.

It should be noted that the research has only raised a hope that these drugs are able to reduce the risk of cancer, and till now, no assured link has been found, which can prove the same. Lead researcher Sigrun Alba Johannesdottir of Aarhus University Hospital in Denmark was of the view that in order to reach at the above given result, they analyzed effect of NSAIDs among people, who were suffering from the risk of different type of skin cancers.

It was found that people, who were taking aspirin for almost 20 years were having 15% less chance of developing squamous cell skin cancer and 13% less chance of developing melanoma. However, no effect was seen for basal cell skin cancer.

Joshua Zeichner, a dermatologist at Mount Sinai Medical Center in New York City was of the view that NSAIDs reduces the level of inflammation, which further helps in reducing the reaction of COX-2, an active enzyme involved in causing skin cancers.

"Sunburns cause inflammation that may lead to the development of skin cancer", said Julie Russak, a dermatologist in New York.
